Machame and Lemosho are the two most recommended routes for climbing Kilimanjaro. This detailed comparison helps you choose between the popular Whiskey Route and the scenic Lemosho approach based on your priorities.

Choosing Your Kilimanjaro Route

If you have researched Kilimanjaro climbing routes, you have almost certainly narrowed your choice to Machame or Lemosho. These two routes consistently receive the highest recommendations from experienced guides and returning climbers, and for good reason. Both offer excellent scenery, strong acclimatization profiles, and high summit success rates. But they differ in meaningful ways that may make one a better fit for you than the other.

The Machame Route: Kilimanjaro's Most Popular Path

The Machame Route, affectionately known as the "Whiskey Route," is the most trekked route on Kilimanjaro. It approaches from the south through dense rainforest, traverses the Shira Plateau, and follows the Southern Circuit to the summit via Barafu Camp and Stella Point. The seven-day itinerary (six days of trekking plus summit night) is the recommended option.

Duration: 6-7 days (7 days strongly recommended)

Distance: Approximately 62 kilometers

Success Rate: Approximately 85% on the 7-day itinerary

Scenery Rating: 9/10

Difficulty: Challenging

Crowd Level: High (most popular route)

Machame's signature feature is the Barranco Wall, a 257-meter rock scramble on Day 4 that is the closest thing to technical climbing on any standard Kilimanjaro route. It sounds intimidating but is essentially a steep hike with some hands-on scrambling, and most trekkers find it one of the highlights of the climb. The route also features the Lava Tower acclimatization day, where you climb to 4,630 meters before descending to sleep at 3,960 meters, a proven strategy for altitude adaptation.

The Lemosho Route: Kilimanjaro's Scenic Premium

The Lemosho Route approaches from the remote western side of Kilimanjaro, beginning with a drive through pristine rainforest before joining the Shira Plateau. It is widely considered the most scenic route on the mountain and offers the best acclimatization profile of any standard route. The eight-day itinerary is recommended.

Duration: 7-8 days (8 days recommended)

Distance: Approximately 70 kilometers

Success Rate: Approximately 90% on the 8-day itinerary

Scenery Rating: 10/10

Difficulty: Challenging

Crowd Level: Moderate (quieter in the first two days)

Lemosho's western approach is exclusive to this route for the first two days, meaning fewer trekkers and a more wilderness-oriented start. The Shira Plateau crossing on Day 3 is one of the most spectacular high-altitude walks in Africa, with 360-degree views and the summit looming above. From Shira, the route joins Machame and follows the identical path to the summit.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Summit Success Rate: Lemosho wins with approximately 90% versus Machame's 85%. The extra day of acclimatization makes a meaningful difference.

Scenery: Lemosho is slightly more scenic, particularly in the first two days on the western approach. Both routes share the spectacular Barranco Wall and Southern Circuit sections.

Crowds: Lemosho is less crowded, especially in the first two days. Both routes converge and share camps from Barranco onward, so the crowd advantage diminishes later in the trek.

Cost: Lemosho is typically $300-500 more expensive than Machame due to the extra day on the mountain and the longer drive to the western trailhead. This covers an additional day of guide fees, porter wages, park fees, and food.

Physical Challenge: Similar difficulty overall. Machame is slightly shorter but the daily stages are longer. Lemosho spreads the effort over more days.

Our Recommendation

If budget and time are not constraints, choose Lemosho. The higher success rate, superior early scenery, and lower crowd levels make it the premium Kilimanjaro experience. If you have exactly one week available or need to minimize cost, Machame is an excellent choice that delivers outstanding scenery and a strong summit success rate.
