Kilimanjaro Gear & Packing Checklist

A comprehensive, category-by-category packing list to ensure you have everything you need for a safe and comfortable Kilimanjaro climb.

Proper gear is critical on Kilimanjaro. Temperatures range from 30 degrees C at the gate to -20 degrees C at the summit. Rain is possible in any season. The right layering system and quality equipment can make the difference between a comfortable climb and a miserable one.

Our porters carry the bulk of your gear in a duffel bag (up to 15 kg). You carry only a daypack with essentials for each day's trek. We provide camping equipment (tents, dining tent, camp chairs, sleeping mats), but you need to bring your own sleeping bag and personal items.

Clothing

Base Layers (worn closest to skin)

  • Moisture-wicking short-sleeve shirts (2-3)
  • Moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirts (2)
  • Thermal long underwear tops (2)
  • Thermal long underwear bottoms (2)
  • Sports bra (women, 2-3)

Mid Layers (insulation)

  • Fleece jacket or pullover (medium weight)
  • Down or synthetic insulated jacket (for summit night)
  • Softshell jacket (optional, great for wind)

Outer Layers (protection)

  • Waterproof/breathable rain jacket (Gore-Tex or equivalent)
  • Waterproof rain pants
  • Windbreaker (lightweight, packable)

Lower Body

  • Hiking pants (convertible recommended, 2 pairs)
  • Warm trekking pants or fleece pants (for camp evenings and summit)
  • Shorts (for lower altitude days)

Head, Hands & Feet

  • Warm fleece or wool beanie
  • Balaclava or neck gaiter (summit night)
  • Sun hat with brim
  • Liner gloves (thin, moisture-wicking)
  • Insulated waterproof gloves or mittens
  • Hiking socks (wool or synthetic, 4-5 pairs)
  • Sock liners (optional, helps prevent blisters)

Footwear

  • Hiking boots (waterproof, ankle support, well broken-in)
  • Camp shoes or sandals (for evenings in camp)
  • Gaiters (recommended for scree sections)
Important: Break in your hiking boots thoroughly before the climb. Do at least 50-100 km of hiking in them before departure. Blisters are one of the most common complaints on the mountain and are entirely preventable.
