Safari Overview

The Great Migration is the largest overland animal movement on Earth, and this eight-day safari is designed specifically to put you in the right place at the right time to witness it. With four full days in the Serengeti, your guide will position you in the area of the park where the herds are currently concentrated, whether that is the calving grounds in the south, the river crossings in the north, or the dramatic Grumeti corridor in the west. This migration-focused itinerary follows a flexible route within the Serengeti based on the current location of the herds. Your guide is in constant communication with other guides and pilots, receiving daily updates on herd movements. When the wildebeest approach the Mara River for their perilous crossings, you will be positioned at the best vantage points. When the herds are calving on the southern plains, you will be there to witness thousands of new lives entering the world each day. Beyond the migration itself, the tour includes a day in Tarangire and a full morning in the Ngorongoro Crater, ensuring you also experience the non-migratory highlights of the northern circuit. Accommodation combines mid-range lodges with seasonal tented camps that position you close to the action. This is a safari for those who want to truly understand and experience one of the greatest natural phenomena on the planet.

Tour Highlights

  • Four days tracking the migration
  • Flexible Serengeti routing
  • River crossing opportunities
  • Calving season viewing
  • Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Depart Arusha for Tarangire National Park, arriving for a full day of game driving among the massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. Tarangire's dry-season wildlife concentrations are among the best in East Africa, and this is the perfect warm-up for the days ahead. Check in to your lodge near the park.
Accommodation: Tarangire Simba Lodge
After breakfast, drive through the Ngorongoro highlands and into the Serengeti. The drive is long but scenically spectacular, passing through Maasai pasturelands, the forested crater rim, and finally descending into the vast Serengeti plains. Afternoon game drive in the central Serengeti to get your bearings in this immense ecosystem.
Accommodation: Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp
A full day tracking the Great Migration herds. Your guide will drive to the area of the Serengeti where the herds are currently concentrated, which varies by season. In January-March, this means the southern calving grounds. In June-July, the Western Corridor and Grumeti River. In August-October, the northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings. Your guide's local knowledge is invaluable in locating the herds.
Accommodation: Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp
Another full day with the migration herds. If river crossings are happening, you will position at the best vantage points. Crossings are unpredictable, so patience is key, but your guide will read the herds' behavior and position you accordingly. Between crossings or during other seasons, the sheer volume of animals on the plains provides constant action and incredible photographic opportunities.
Accommodation: Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp
Your final full day in the Serengeti focuses on predator encounters. The vast herds attract every predator species, and your guide will seek out lion prides, cheetah families, leopards, and hyena clans. A bush breakfast or sundowner adds a special touch to this day. Enjoy the last Serengeti sunset from a scenic viewpoint before returning to camp.
Accommodation: Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp
Morning game drive in the Serengeti before departing for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stop at Olduvai Gorge to learn about the archaeological discoveries that have shaped our understanding of human evolution. Arrive at your crater-rim lodge and enjoy panoramic views of the caldera during a relaxed evening.
Accommodation: Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn for a full morning of game driving. The crater is a fitting finale to this migration-focused safari, offering an entirely different ecosystem and the chance to see species not encountered in the Serengeti, particularly black rhino. The enclosed world of the crater floor never fails to impress.
Accommodation: Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge
After breakfast, drive from the Ngorongoro highlands back to Arusha, passing through the lush agricultural lands around Karatu and the town of Makuyuni. Arrive in Arusha by lunchtime, with the afternoon free for shopping, packing, or visiting a local market before your onward journey.
